KOOYAR CAVERSHAM VALLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Kooyar the Motorbike Frog

Originating as a superficial groundwater aquifer, Korndiny Karla Boodja - or Bennett Brook as it is now known, flows through Mussel Pool and runs south to join the Swan River at Bassendean and forms part of the boundary of our school catchment area.

Bennett Brook and its associated wetlands are an important habitat for many animals including Kooyar- the Motor Bike Frog. Its name is derived from the male frog's mating call, which sounds like a motorbike changing up through its gears.

For this reason, it was chosen as the subject for the public art installation commissioned when the school was built in 2019.

The artist, Jahne Rees is renowned for bringing public artwork into the play space. The central idea for the Kooyar artwork was to create an active play space around the idea of a frog riding a motorbike, with the primary function being a slide. The concrete surfaces features coloured designs referencing the incredible array of colours and patterns the Kooyar displays.

The artwork also features QR code plaques which relay stories of the frog from local Noongar elders.
